How high school ice hockey star Trey Feckho got into ice hockey in the first place is a funny story. Growing up in Arkansas his parents were preparing him for baseball or football season. A friend visited in his hockey gear and Fechko wanted to try it. He ended up liking it so his parents got him gear, he started playing and the rest is history.
Fechko figured out he wanted to go to Arizona State University after his freshman season of high school hockey. During the 2020-21 high school hockey season Fechko racked up 12 goals with 22 assists for 39 points in 23 games.
Being from Minnesota, a hockey hotbed, Fechko could’ve chosen University of Minnesota or another school in that area. But for Fechko, it was the coaching staff and warm climate that lured him to ASU.
“The number one reason was the coaching staff, Coach [Greg] Powers, Coach [Michael] Field and Coach [Alex] Hicks, they’re all great guys and I believe in what they’re building and I really want to be a part of it,” Fechko said.
He also explained how Arizona is a great place with Tempe, the campus, and how he just loved everything about it.
Moving forward
Fechko will arrive in Tempe for the 2022-23 season, but for 2021-22 he’s heading to Canada to join the Coquitlam Express. The Express are members of the Junior-A British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL). Fans in both Coquitlam and Tempe are in for a treat with his speed and ability to score. Express GM Tali Campbell was quoted in other articles saying how Fechko is a speedy and tenacious with the ability to work all three zones.
Fechko explained he’ll take the lessons he’s learned from older guys he looked up to, learned lessons from, as well as his hard work and work ethic.
For Fechko, this will be his first time playing on a team outside the United States so he’s excited to see what the environment will be like. But what should fans in Coquitlam and Tempe expect from him?
“A lot of points, a lot of goals, I feel like my offensive abilities is my strong suit, my strong point in my game,” Fechko said. “I feel like I’m a hard worker and I’m going to give it a 100% every shift and I’m just going to do whatever to help the team win.”
Next season with Coquitlam
When it comes to his decision to join Coquitlam it wasn’t necessarily an easy one. Fechko explained he was in touch with a number of teams. However, was Coquitlam’s coaching staff was in contact with him a lot.
“I really liked what they were all about and their style of play and you know they contacted a lot and I was just really comfortable with them and that’s kind of why I chose to commit to them for next season,” Fechko said.
Fechko really emphasized his ability to rack up points in each game he plays and explained how his goal is to be a point per game player. But that’s not just for Coquitlam, he said that’s really his goal everywhere. He wants to contribute to the team, help them win and do whatever he can to help them win a Fred Page Cup championship.
Fechko said he’s looking forward to playing at the next level and the different atmosphere since it’ll be something new for him.
Arrival in Tempe
When Fechko arrives in Tempe, Sun Devil hockey will have their brand new 5,000 seat arena ready to go. He thinks it’ll be great to play in. Fechko explained how Coach Powers has built a really strong program in a short period of time and he’s ready to be a part of the tradition.
