Cubs rally in ninth to beat Rockies 6-5

The Chicago Cubs pulled off an impressive 6-5 comeback win over the Colorado Rockies on Sunday in spring training action. Down 5-3 in the top of the ninth inning, the Cubs scored three runs on three singles to grab the lead and steal a win from the Rockies.

The first inning was a sore sight for the North Siders, as former Cub Kris Bryant hammered a home run into left field to give Colorado a 1-0 lead. An Elías Díaz RBI single later in the inning would extend the Rockies lead to two.

After David Bote cut the lead in half with an RBI double in the second inning, Ryan McMahon played longball with a homer to center to give Colorado a 3-1 lead. New North Sider Trey Mancini would answer McMahon’s home run with one of his own in the top of the fourth, and an Ian Happ RBI single in the fifth tied the game at three.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Rockies scored two runs which seemed to ensure a Colorado victory at Salt River Fields. However, the Cubs would have something to say about that and thensome.

Darius Hill, Andy Weber and Esteban Quiroz each delivered in the clutch with consecutive RBI singles to give the Cubs an improbable 6-5 lead. Didier Vargas would shut the door in the bottom of the ninth to get the save and seal the comeback victory for Chicago.

The Cubs next spring training game is against the Seattle Mariners on Monday, while the Rockies will host the Texas Rangers on the same day.
